This hand-carved wooden mask represents the face of an Iroquois individual from Canada, highlighted by the excellent sculpting of the facial features that gives it a regal and warrior-like appearance. Additionally, the delicate carving of the feathers on the head is appreciated.

The Iroquois formed a confederation known as the Five Nations, which comprised the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. This confederation, also called the Iroquois Confederacy, later expanded to six nations when the Tuscarora joined.

Traditionally, the Iroquois lived in fortified villages composed of longhouses, elongated housing structures made of wood and bark. They depended on agriculture, hunting, fishing, and gathering for subsistence.

Today, there are Iroquois communities in Canada living in reserves recognized by the government. These communities have preserved important aspects of their culture and traditions.

ENGLISH
Carved in wood and hand-painted, this mask of an Iroquois person from the Onondaga nation in Canada stands out for its eyes with inlays of golden metal, prominent nose, extremely large mouth, and head adorned with long, black natural hair.

The Iroquois believed that the Great Spirit was the creator of animals, plants, and human beings, and that it controlled the forces of nature for good. They also believed in the Orenda, a spiritual force that influenced all things. They believed that if people respected nature, the Orenda would bring positive results.

According to the Iroquois, there were three types of spirits: those that live on the earth itself, those that come upon it, and of course, the one that controlled the entire universe, which is the Great Spirit.
