ENGLISH

Hand-carved mask made by artisans from the Bragança region of Portugal, sculpted directly from a natural growth on the trunk of an ash tree, taking advantage of its original shape, volume, and texture. This particular choice of support incorporates the tree’s natural morphology into the configuration of the work, resulting in a distinctive piece.

The mask has an amorphous configuration, defined by round pierced eyes, a prominent triangular nose with clearly marked nostrils, and an open, asymmetrical, oval-shaped mouth. The richness of the colors and the distinctive texture of the wood enhance the natural irregularities of the support and highlight the interaction between the artisan’s intervention and the organic material.

Abnormal growths in ash trees may appear as localized deformations or swellings in the wood. These formations can have different causes and produce irregular volumes that, in this case, have been incorporated by the artisan as an integral part of the work, transforming a natural feature of the tree into a fundamental element of its sculptural expression.
