Tiki representations are associated with figures of divine and spiritual significance. Tiki sculptures and masks were conceived as material representations of particular deities, embodying their power and presence. Traditionally, they were believed to have protective qualities and could be associated with protection, strength, prosperity and abundance within the community.

Among the principal Hawaiian deities represented in Tiki sculptures are Kū, associated with war; Lono, associated with agriculture, fertility and peace; Kāne, connected with creation, sunlight, forests and fresh water; and Kanaloa, associated with the ocean and the sea.
